Luxury interior architecture and design house Spinocchia Freund are known for their multi-layered concepts, bold use of texture and curated colour palettes. The tiniest of details are carefully considered in equal measure against the bigger picture.
Hand & Lock has worked with SF for many years on a number of exciting commercial and residential interior projects, working closely to bring imaginative embroidery concepts to life.
When we were approached by SF earlier this year to collaborate with them for WOW!house 2025, we jumped at the opportunity!
We worked closely with the SF team, discussing a whole host of creative ideas before focusing on two core pieces in the scheme.

Spinocchia Freund’s stunning design ‘The Curator’s room’ is a reflection of the studio’s values: curatorial, collectible and collaborative.
“Inspired by ‘Ninth Street Women’ and ‘The Story of Art Without Men’ by Mary Gabriel and The Great Women Artists, I began to reflect on how women have been left out of the design canon. The Curator’s Room asks: What happens when we center female creators not just in theory, but in practice?
Every piece in the room was made by a woman. Some are established names, others are emerging voices, but all are united by narrative, materiality and intent.” - Brigitta Freund - Founder & Creative Director of Spinocchia Freund.
Hand & Lock is proud to be female led with a fully female in house studio team. The collaborative pieces were created in house, in our London Studio by designers Liss & Connie - with support from Alice, Karin, Colette, Keren, Jenna, Charlotte, Lucy and Aparna.
The Luella Bartley x Hand & Lock Ottoman
Interpreted from one of Luella Bartley’s beautiful paintings, this piece was a true labour of love and an exploration into experimental embroidery, seamlessly blending hand and digital processes. Like a painting, layers upon layers of colours, tones and textures were carefully considered, blending fabrics and threads like a painter’s palette. Organza fabrics were layered to build intensity and depth of colour whilst the mark making was designed manually stitch by stitch.
“The piece began as a conversation about form & femininity. Luella’s transition from fashion to fine art felt seamless. Her painted figures carry the same intimate strength that defined her earlier work. When we met recently, it felt natural to explore how one of the figures could live within a furniture piece” - Brigitta Freund - Founder & Creative Director of Spinocchia Freund.
The final result is something that feels both timeless and extremely innovative.

The Patti Smith Sofa

A warm tobacco Pierre Frey linen covers a gently curving sofa, upholstered by Kuhn interiors. Hand & Lock adorned oversized cushion panels with the powerful lyrics of Patti Smith, rendered in machine embroidery with hand embroidery finishing.
We worked interactively with our digital embroidery machines to apply a ruched fabric manipulation in a tonal georgette. Chunky woollen threads and cross stitch textures give a tapestry-like feel to the panels, cementing them into the fabric base.
Hand guided machine embroidery in chain stitch and cording adds texture and relief, whilst contemporary hammered Goldwork gives a subtle yet luxurious highlight.

We are so proud of the finished pieces which stand at the cutting edge of embroidery innovation whilst also retaining a timeless feeling of true craftsmanship.
“The exquisite shade and tone Hand & Lock were able to bring into the pieces was next-level! Each piece has a subtle intensity; rich, moody and full of feeling. The pieces brought a whole new depth to the space and really elevated the room as a whole.” - Brigitta Freund - Founder & Creative Director of Spinocchia Freund.

The The Luella Bartley x Hand & Lock Ottoman collaboration is stunning and I can’t wait to see it in person at the WOW house. This is an art piece which no one should sit on and the process should be studied! Is the piece a one off? I did not realise that Luella Bartley had moved on creating Art.
Utterly spectacular results! What an interesting — and visually arresting — project! So rich in every regard!
