Introducing 'Garden Party' the brand new collection from Studio Coverdale and Hand & Lock
Step behind the scenes of ‘Garden Party’, an enchanting new collaboration between Hand & Lock and artist & designer Natasha Coverdale, the creative force behind Studio Coverdale. This exclusive collection brings together the vivid, dreamlike world of Natasha’s signature floral and Hand & Lock's exquisite embroidery.
Inspired by whimsical English garden tea parties, blooming rose gardens, and fantastical plant life, Garden Party reimagines some of Natasha’s most beloved prints - including Tempting Fête and Vicarage Tea - in gorgeous embroidery. Renowned for her vibrant, imaginary botanicals and saturated colour palettes, Natasha steps into the realm of embroidery for the first time, with Hand & Lock’s artisans bringing her vision to life in spectacular detail.

Speaking to Natasha Coverdale
Natasha is a British designer and artist based in Hove. With over 20 years of experience in design, Natasha specialises in standout botanical illustrations inspired by 17th-century French textiles and Japanese woodblock prints. Her work is characterised by vibrant florals, bold colours and hidden details.
When creating this collection we had to highlight one of our favourite hidden details, Derek the 'Tiny Punk Iguana', who can often be found hidden in many of Natasha's prints. To celebrate the launch of this collection we have hidden some embroidered Derek stickers in a selection of orders!
Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind your print designs for the collection?
It’s been a joy to include flowers that have both a familiar English Garden feel and a nostalgic and playful spirit! I enjoy that Clover Brooch contains the word ‘love’ - and so adding hearts within this lucky talisman is a little nod to plant folklore too.
What was it like seeing your designs and illustrations come to life through embroidery?
I usually work with flat prints - either in paper or fabric form - and now I have been utterly seduced by the texture of embroidery. I love the touch and feel - the materiality. Being able to pick up the leaves and petals and feel beaded seeds - truly adds to the immersion. Making my digital work - tangible. A delight!
Were there any surprises, things that turned out differently (in a good way!) once embroidery was involved?
The glisten and shine of the thread really catches the light and the embroidery is far more intricate and embellished than I could have imagined. I love to hide hidden visual treasure in my illustration and the addition of beads, gold tread and creative stitching adds great depth and texture - a whole new level of charm and wonder.
Do you have a favourite piece from the collection?
That is so very hard to answer! I can imagine popping on the Lovers Clover when I fancy a little extra luck.. Ooh but Sir Thorny Weaver on a big chunky jumper or hat would be amazing! Let’s face it - I want to wear them all!
And finally… what does Derek the ‘Tiny Punk Iguana’ think of his embroidered patch debut? Has fame gone to his head?
Haha he’s a pretty cool guy… He’s handling it very tastefully… I’ll be very keen to see where his patches end up hiding…

Speaking to Hand & Lock
Jasmine Ataç, Liss Cooke and Alice Murrell, from the Hand & Lock design team have highlighted some of their favourite parts of working on this collaborative collection.
It's got to be the Ziggy Flower Brooch! I love the contemporary translation of traditional hand embroidery techniques. The dramatic use of bump to raise up the vibrant range of materials into the light showcases the best of the old and new. Working with our workshop to steer centuries old hand-craft methods into the more dynamic illustrative strokes of Natasha's prints was an exciting challenge which shows in the embroidery itself - re-interpreting materials which typically don't allow for such graphic and painterly pieces. |
I love both the Thorny Weaver pieces. It's fantastic to see the design in 2 varying scales and how the embroidery approach differs between them. The richness of colour we were able to achieve with the combination of threads and goldwork bullions is worlds away from a traditional goldwork palette. |
My favourite item is the Garden Party Heart patch. The scene within is bursting with life and colour - it just feels so joyous! There is so much intricate stitch detail too, the more you look the more you find. The hot pink satin base and orange border perfectly frames the whole piece. |
We are so proud of this collaboration and the incredible pieces of art that have come out of it, and we hope you love it just as much as we do!
