What format do the Diploma Courses take?

Our Diploma Courses are delivered live via Zoom, with additional support through a
dedicated WhatsApp group to share photos, ask questions, and connect with tutors and classmates. Use the links above for our handy guides on downloading Zoom and WhatsApp

Are the Diploma sessions recorded?

Yes! All sessions are recorded and sent to students after each class. You can download and keep the videos indefinitely, making it easy to review tutorials and refresh your skills anytime.

How long are the recordings of the sessions available for?

You have one week to download each session recording from the link we send. After downloading, the recordings are yours to keep forever as a valuable learning resource.

What is the difference between a Standard Diploma and a Complete Diploma?

The Standard Diploma includes 3 units that provide a foundational understanding of key embroidery techniques and industry skills.

The Complete Diploma covers the full curriculum, enabling you to create a professional portfolio showcasing your embroidery expertise.

Can I visit the Hand & Lock studio during the Diploma?

Yes! We host open studio days throughout the year where you can bring your work for
advice and meet fellow students in person. Attendance is optional and not required for those studying internationally

Can I purchase one module at a time?

Absolutely. You can buy individual units and complete them at your own pace. Each unit must be completed within two years after the 10-week teaching period ends. There’s no overall time limit to finish the full Diploma.

Do multiple modules need to be booked within the same year?

Currently, Diploma course dates are limited. If booking multiple modules, you’ll need to select from the available dates.

Do existing Diploma students get priority booking?

Yes. Returning students are added to a priority list for early access to new Diploma dates before public release.

How many students are in each module?

Each module has a maximum of 20 students to ensure personalised tutor support and opportunities for one-on-one feedback during sessions.

Is there a size limit on the final project?

No size limit! We encourage creativity, but keep in mind you have two years to complete your final piece, so plan your project scale accordingly. Tutors will guide you during the design process.

Do I need to post my finished pieces to Hand & Lock?

No. All Diploma submissions are digital - you’ll provide high-resolution images of your work. This protects your pieces and makes participation easier for international students. We provide detailed instructions and resources to help with this.

How do the online sessions work? 

Sessions run live on Zoom with WhatsApp support. After booking, you’ll receive instructions for both platforms and be added to the class WhatsApp group to share work and ask questions.

How can I pay for the Diploma?

All bookings are made through our website. If a module is sold out, register your interest for future availability. We offer payment instalments via Klarna at checkout, learn more about Klarna here. Please note Diploma courses are not eligible for student finance.

Can I earn or use Rewards Points on the Diploma?

The Diploma does not qualify for earning or redeeming points through the Hand & Lock Rewards Programme.

Does the Diploma contribute UCAS points?

No, the Diploma doesn’t add UCAS points but provides valuable skills and experience to enhance your CV and creative applications.

Do I need to buy materials for the Diploma?

You will receive a kit with all essential materials before your course begins. Additional suppliers’ lists are provided if you want to purchase extra supplies. Students also enjoy 10% off Hand & Lock shop purchases during their course (exclusions apply).

What if the Diploma module I want is sold out?

No additional spaces will be added once a course is sold out. Sign up for our waiting list to get notified when spaces open up for the next dates. You can Register your interest here.

How long does it take to complete the Diploma?

The Diploma runs over a calendar year from January to December, but you can complete it at your own pace within two years from starting each unit. There is no pressure to finish quickly - flexibility is key to enjoying your learning experience.

Do I have to complete the units in a specific order?

No - you can complete the five units in any order you choose. This allows you to tailor
your learning to your interests and schedule.

What support is available during the Diploma?

We offer live online sessions with expert tutors who guide you through each stage. Additional one-to-one sessions can be booked for extra help. We also host occasional Open Studio days in our London studios where you can get in-person advice.

What if I’m new to embroidery or design?

No prior qualifications or experience are required to enrol. Our tutors will support you with every step, including design. We encourage you to take an introductory Hand & Lock online course before the Diploma if you wish.

What materials will I need?

Each unit includes a materials kit provided by Hand & Lock, carefully curated to suit the techniques you’ll learn. You will also need a slate frame (which can be used for all units) and drawing/design tools such as pens, pencils, coloured pencils, and paints.

Can I use my own materials?

Absolutely! We encourage you to explore your creativity by sourcing your own materials. If you do need to buy new we provide a list of trusted suppliers and you get 10% off in the Hand & Lock shop while you study (exclusions apply)

How is the Diploma assessed?

Assessment is optional. You can choose to submit your work for marking to receive a Certificate of Achievement or simply complete the course and receive a Certificate of Completion.

Is the course language English only?

The course is taught in English. However, our online platform includes language support options to help adapt to your learning needs.
