In the Victorian era, love was often viewed as a "folly" that made even the wisest of people act foolishly when head over heels. Many Valentine’s cards from this period also drew inspiration from Pierrot the "sad clown" who pined for love.
For these reasons, Cupid was often depicted as a clown during this time, clothed like a harlequin with frills, ruff and pointed hat.
Our Victorian Cupid patch is embroidered onto ivory felt with ivory, red, gold and silver threads.
