Bring a charming tortoise to life with Hand & Lock's Trevor the Tortoise Taster. In this 3-hour workshop, you'll discover  traditional Goldwork embroidery while creating your own beautifully stitched tortoise using a selection of classic metal thread techniques. Ideal for complete beginners and those looking to explore Goldwork for the first time, this relaxed and engaging class introduces the essential techniques used to add texture, dimension, and shimmer to your embroidery. With step-by-step guidance and personalised support from our expert tutors, you'll gain confidence as you bring your tortoise design to life. To make your project yours, you will choose from a selection of base fabric colours and different colour threads on the day.

Techniques & Breakdown

This engaging taster class offers the perfect introduction to the art of Goldwork embroidery, teaching you the essential techniques used to bring your tortoise design to life. Our expert tutors will guide you through the fundamentals of traditional metal thread embroidery, demonstrating how to apply pearl purl, create smooth satin stitch foundations, and mixing cutwork and chipping to add beautiful texture and definition to your piece. Each technique will be demonstrated live by our experienced embroidery specialists, who will provide personalised guidance and support throughout the session.

Hand & Lock School - In Person Course Set Up

How the Course Works

All in person courses are delivered in our embroidery school, located at Hand & Lock, 86 Margaret Street, Fitzrovia, London, W1W 8TE. The school is situated upstairs from our studio and is easily accessible by public transport.

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early to the class - if you are earlier there are lots of great coffee shops nearby. If you are running late please let us know as soon as possible.

Lunch is not included and the school room will be locked for a one-hour break, with the timing set by the tutor. We also have a list of local places to grab lunch, and there are lots of lovely venues nearby.

Accessibility

Our school is located upstairs in our studio. Unfortunately the building does not have lift access, so use of the stairs would be necessary.

Materials

All of the materials you need for this class will be provided for you as part of your course experience, but you are more than welcome to bring your own equipment if you would rather use your own tools.
