In this 3-hour workshop, you'll create a beautifully embroidered shell while learning a selection of classic Goldwork techniques, including pearl purl, chipping, satin stitch, and cutwork. Designed for complete beginners and those looking to build their Goldwork skills, this relaxed and welcoming class offers the perfect introduction to metal thread embroidery. With guidance from our expert tutors, you'll learn how to combine these traditional techniques to create texture, dimension, and shine in your embroidery. To make your project yours, you will choose from a selection of base fabric colours and different colour threads on the day.

Techniques & Breakdown

This inspiring taster class offers the perfect introduction to the art of Goldwork embroidery, beginning with the fundamental techniques used in traditional metal thread work. Our expert tutors will guide you through essential skills, demonstrating how to apply pearl purl, create smooth satin stitch foundations, goldwork cutwork, and add beautiful texture and sparkle with chipping. Each technique will be demonstrated live by our experienced embroidery specialists, who will provide personalised guidance and support throughout the session. By the end of the class, you'll have gained confidence in these core Goldwork techniques while creating your own beautifully embroidered shell.

Hand & Lock School - In Person Course Set Up

How the Course Works

All in person courses are delivered in our embroidery school, located at Hand & Lock, 86 Margaret Street, Fitzrovia, London, W1W 8TE. The school is situated upstairs from our studio and is easily accessible by public transport.

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early to the class - if you are earlier there are lots of great coffee shops nearby. If you are running late please let us know as soon as possible.

Lunch is not included and the school room will be locked for a one-hour break, with the timing set by the tutor. We also have a list of local places to grab lunch, and there are lots of lovely venues nearby.

Accessibility

Our school is located upstairs in our studio. Unfortunately the building does not have lift access, so use of the stairs would be necessary.

Materials

All of the materials you need for this class will be provided for you as part of your course experience, but you are more than welcome to bring your own equipment if you would rather use your own tools.
