An Ode to Hazel

Jeannie, from Bideford, Devon, graduated in 2024 with a degree in Textile Design from Falmouth University, specialising in mixed-media embroidery. Her practice is rooted in storytelling, drawing inspiration from film, literature and archives. Her graduate collection won the Liberty Design Studio Prize and received sponsorship from The Embroiderers’ Guild.

An Ode to Hazel is inspired by the life of Hazel Sims (1922–2016), a passionate amateur embroiderer whose collection is housed in the Falmouth and Exeter University Archive. The piece draws on an eclectic mix of Hazel’s embroideries, personal books and diaries, which carefully document everyday moments of her life and her involvement with the Embroiderers’ Guild. The archive provides a beautiful and intimate record of an extraordinary ordinary woman of her generation.
