Digital machine embroidery can be beautifully enhanced with hand embroidery and beading or combined with fabric appliqué, padding, and fringing to create diverse and richly textured designs.
We work closely with Kara, founder of Uncommon Ancestor to create these beautiful, embroidered artworks; transforming the humble footstool into a storytelling canvas.
For the past few years, Hand & Lock's digital embroidery department has helped to develop each of the bespoke motifs - each one rooted in personal memory and meaning. For Kara, every commission begins with a conversation, uncovering the objects that best capture a client’s story. Much like the icons and symbols used by artists throughout history, these embroidered designs offer a deeply personal expression of identity, crafted to be passed down through generations.
H&L renders the designs using upholstery quality embroidery techniques and build depth, colour and shading with the use of different stitches and thread textures. Kara has a keen eye for detail and loves colour, which makes these pieces a joy to work on!
