‘The Crane Wife’, is a story of transformation and sacrifice.
Inspired by her passion for heirloom bridalwear, Amy is drawn to the enduring connections between textiles and female stories. Her piece incorporates themes of concealment and transformation, evoking ballet swan maidens. J.S. Sargent is another influence: a painterly quality emerges through lyrical machine embroidery, layering reclaimed bridal lace and salvaged fabrics over an underpainting. The story’s Japanese origins inform Sashiko-inspired motifs and vertical emphasis, while a Braille-inspired title and contoured finish allow multisensory storytelling. Amy’s ethereal piece invites reflection of toil, devotion and untold stories woven into beautiful cloth.
