Take an exclusive look behind the scenes, into the making of Elton John’s Embroidered Angel Wing Jacket
The embroidery was designed and produced by Hand & Lock London, in collaboration with Elton’s stylist, Jo Hambro. The jacket itself was expertly tailored by our friends at Mirpuri Bespoke.
‘Who Believes in Angels’ is a collaborative album between the legendary Sir Elton John and American singer songwriter Brandi Carlile. It was released in April 2025 and has become Elton’s 10th studio album to reach no. 1!
The golden angel wing-adorned jacket was made for the album cover photoshoot and music video for the title track ‘Who Believes in Angels’, both shot by David Lachapelle.
In early 2024 we met with Jo Hambro and mused over themes of Marie Antonionette, the Palace of Versailles, vintage jewellery and winged sculptures - all of which Jo chose to match Elton’s vision. We gathered primary and secondary research, taking reference from books on Versailles, digital archives and jewellery sourced by Jo, to build a cohesive moodboard that encompassed our vision for the project.
From this, we began to sketch initial ideas. Early concepts incorporated gilt frames, a winged ‘E’ monogram and figurines inspired by stone angel statues at Versailles. Our favourite concept by far was a pair of life sized angel wings, framed by a beautiful floral garland draped over the shoulders.
We developed our sketches into detailed collages using clippings, drawings and photographs. Working to scale on a life-size print out of the jacket (affectionately referred to as ‘Paper Elton’) by placing and adjusting collaged elements until we were happy with the final layout.

Next, we began to translate the artwork into a layered, three dimensional embroidery design.
Working entirely by hand onto delicate tulle, we tested smaller flowers & motifs, experimenting with a wide range of materials and techniques. We wanted the embroidery to feel richly textured with layers of interest.

The techniques we used included embellishment with beading and crystals, goldwork and the application of metal components and vintage glass flowers. We created further depth and dimension through 3D sequin work by gently heating, moulding and sculpting sequins into unique shapes. The moulded sequins were then densely layered to give the illusion of flower petals.
The sculptural wings were created using intricate micro beading in pearly ivory and pale golden tones. We embroidered over wire so that each frond could be manipulated. We wanted the wings to feel weightless, as if they were catching flight!
Once the embroidery was complete, the final step of the process was to carefully stitch the wings and flowers in place onto the golden jacket, carefully trimming away the excess tulle.
We were so excited to have the team from Universal Music visit us in the studio during the final stages of production, to capture the jacket coming to life.
