Introducing our Icons and Pioneers collection: a series of kits inspired by the lives of notable women throughout history.
Mary Anning was a fossil hunter and self-taught paleontologist who made major discoveries along England’s Jurassic Coast in the 1800s, accompanied by her beloved dog Tray. Though overlooked in her time, her work changed how we understand prehistoric life now. Among her most famous finds was the Ichthyosaur fossil - an ancient sea creature whose bones she carefully unearthed from cliffs by the sea.
We were inspired by the Jurassic Coast she searched creating a trio of fossil motifs with glass 'water' droplets, as if they have just been discovered in a rock pool. Through this kit you will learn the art of Goldwork embroidery including cutwork, chipping & threadwork.
The kit includes a natural colour chenille base fabric with printed design and the bullions, gunmetal beads, threads and bio sequins needed to create this artwork.
For an extra special detail this kit includes biodegradable, plastic free sequins made by CQ Studios. CQ Studio conducts R&D of regenerative, local textiles and utilises waste to create new materials and systems of production including using mushrooms to clean wastewater to make plastic-free, biodegradable sequins and beads. This technology reduces environmental pollution by detoxifying textile-dye wastewater and preventing waste from entering ecosystems. These sequins use zero plastic to minimise microplastic pollution, while the reuse use of food and fungi waste cuts greenhouse gas emissions and supports a circular economy by taking waste from one industry to be regenerated into something new for fashion. Charity Donation £1 per sale will go directly to the Wonder Foundation - a women-led charity dedicated to transforming the lives of women, girls, and their communities through quality education. wonderfoundation.org.ukCQ Studio conducts R&D of regenerative, local textiles and utilises waste to create new materials and systems of production including using mushrooms to clean wastewater to make plastic-free bio-embellishments (this is currently patent-pending). They create bespoke designs, and regenerative artwork using the materials and processes developed in-house. They use various techniques from hand-embroidery, design for disassembly, regenerative design and plant pigment extraction to create their work. Their work has been presented at exhibitions and showcases including Wallpaper* Magazine, Dazed, Vogue Business and have been commissioned by Veuve Clicquot, Dead Rabbit NYC, HRH King Charles and LVMH for the IUCN World Congress.
Alongside the research of innovative materials, they deliver workshops as part of the Breaking Ground series and have worked with organisations such as Pangaia, Soho House, Victoria and Albert Museum and Prince’s Trust. They have also been awarded accolades for their work including the EU Commission Worth II Partnership Project, Arts Council DYCP, Mayor’s Entrepreneur Awards for Creative Industries and support from Innovate UK.
