Course Design Inspiration

This course is inspired by the beauty of the natural world and the way embroidery can capture its detail in three dimensions. Goldwork has long been associated with richness and refinement, yet when shaped and layered it can also take on a playful and sculptural quality. From delicate petals to tiny insects, embroidery becomes a way of reimagining nature in thread and metal. The focus is on creativity and experimentation, encouraging you to see how traditional goldwork techniques can be transformed into textured forms that feel fresh, contemporary and uniquely your own.

List of Taught Techniques

During this course with Amy you will learn how to:

  • Prepare pearl purl and couch it neatly onto fabric

  • Wire shapes to create three-dimensional goldwork sculpture

  • Create chipping by cutting bullion purls into 2mm lengths and attaching them to fabric

  • Prepare and stitch bullion loops using smooth purl

  • Stack beads to build surface texture and dimension

  • Make your own beads from felt to add sculptural detail

  • Combine layering and shaping techniques to bring depth to your design

  • Apply traditional goldwork methods in contemporary, creative ways

What You’ll Need to Provide

You will be given a full course kit with everything you need to take part. All materials and tools are provided, so you only need to bring yourself.

If you would prefer, you are welcome to bring your own mug for refreshments and your own drawing materials. This is entirely optional and not required for the course.
