Discover Hand & Lock's innovative & dynamic course - The ultimate Digital Embroidery Masterclass. This is a fully bespoke, 5 hour session taught on a 1-1 basis. Digital machine embroidery is fast becoming the go-to technique for cost effective yet super creative embroidery designs that can be made in a fraction of the time of hand embroidery. This technique can be used in combination with many embroidery techniques for a mixed media approach. Popular among contemporary fashion designers & influencers - digital embroidery is hugely versatile and can be utilised to customise, upcycle & add beautiful detail to almost any item.
If you are booking on behalf of someone else, please provide the name and email address of the individual who will be partaking in the course. You can provide these in the order notes.
This session covers the art of 'digitising', using our specialist digital embroidery software Wilcom. Digitising is the process of translating an artwork, drawing or photograph into an intricate digital embroidery file. Using the software, we'll design a 'stitch file' selecting from a wide variety of stitch techniques, densities, spacings & angles (to name just a few functions!); rendering the artwork into a creative digital embroidery design.
This class will cover both the basics of Wilcom, as well as more complex skills and specialist insider tips from the H&L digital embroidery team. You will learn how to blend and layer techniques to build an industry standard design. You'll leave the session with an understanding of the practical applications of digital embroidery and how to go on to apply what you've learnt into your own practice.
Students are not required to bring anything with them to the session! However, If you have an artwork, logo or drawing in mind that you would like to work on during the session, you are welcome to bring this along. (For beginners, we usually recommend a simple artwork size of around 15x15cm max)
The latter half of the class includes a machine induction, covering programming and running a digital embroidery machine. You will learn how to take your digital artwork from the screen onto fabric and will go home with a physical sample to cherish! If you'd like to bring your own fabric or garment to embroider onto during the session, you are welcome to bring this along. This is not necessary though; all materials and fabrics required in the session will be provided by H&L as standard.
As a fully bespoke session, the itinerary can be tailored to suit your needs. You'll have the opportunity to discuss with your tutor beforehand, so whether you wish to focus more on expert digitising skills, working with lace or organza or incorporating fabric applique into your designs for example, we'll ensure this is covered.
Disclaimer - If you wish to continue your digital embroidery practice at home after the session, this will require access to software & machinery so please bear this in mind before booking a class. All materials for the day will be provided. Upon successful completion of the class, students receive an official Hand & Lock certificate detailing the new skills mastered Please note, class bookings are non refundable
