CATitalism

CATitalism is a collection based on an imagined future where humans forgo
financial capitalism and instead adopt the lifestyles of cats. In this imaginary world, cats are a symbol of freedom and joy. People worship cats, and Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun in Japanese Shinto mythology; who has been reinterpreted as a cat.

Alongside Amaterasu is a goldfish taxi accompanied by waves from Katsushika Hokusai’s ukiyo-e art piece. Finally, Lunar Moth Cat is depicted dancing in a variety of poppy flowers.

To showcase the playful embroidery, Poppy is inspired by kakejiku, traditional Japanese wall-hanging usually depicting serious and introspective art. She uses old obi and kimono fabric from her grandmother to make the foundation of the kakejiku, which adds rich colours and patterns to frame her embroidery. Utilising bamboo sticks from her garden and vintage chandelier quartz as weights to add to the structure. Repurposing materials from her heritage and surroundings is core to Poppy’s design practice and principles.
