Under the Skin

Natalia Rios work of art, “Under the Skin”, is a metaphor for our evolution, identity and life-story. Its concept is based on the transformation of the skin and ourselves throughout the years, with all its different colours, layers and scars interpreted with embroidery – all hand-made.

The embroidery becomes a textile sculpture with all the skin layers one over the other, each of them with its spots, scars and beauty that we develop from personal experiences, changing us from outside to inside.

In the form of flower petals, each layer represents a different life period of our skin, from birth to an old age. The work shows several designs, materials, textures and techniques of embroidery, with traditional needle and crochet de Luneville. Among the materials used by Natalia, you can find beads, sequins, silk thread and metallic gold thread.

In the quest for our own identity, Natalia believes the skin is a powerful symbol of transformation and self-knowledge in our lives, just like embroidery.
