The Bio-Vessel

The Bio-Vessel collection was born from the question – How can native species encourage ecologically responsible design? Inspired by the Saw Palmetto, Yaupon Holly, Eastern Oyster and Spanish Moss indigenous to my home of Savannah,
Georgia, it melds the artistic practices of embroidery and sculpture, with the scientific practice of chemistry. The collection transforms natural biopolymers and native plant and marine species into evocative materials that are beautiful
and environmentally responsible. Through form, pattern, color and texture, the series rediscovers and celebrates the cultural and environmental importance of native species to our collective ecosystem.

The needle and thread serve as drawing and communication tools transforming research into embroidered patterns where bold saturated colors complement the soft muted colors of the raw material forms. Taking the shape of the vessel, the four-piece collection provides an intimate way to reconnect the hand and eye with the beauty, complexity and fragility of our environment and encourages new ways of envisioning a healthier material future for our shared planet.
