Charlotte Farrant

The Codification of Stitch
Mentor: Danielle Clough
Country: United Kingdom
Charlotte embraces her passion for innovation, aiming to create intellectual depth in her work and move embroidery beyond perceived idealisms. While training at the Royal School of Needlework, she developed The Codification of Stitch, a classification method for stitch that encodes hidden messages within her embroidery.
This project explores the intrinsic link between a person’s garment and how they are understood by society. Inspired by Anne Lister's pioneering and rebellious lifestyle, Charlotte created a coding system through embroidery, enabling Anne Lister's coded diaries to be decoded and reproduced stitch by stitch. Each stitched ‘message’ within her work either directly references Lister’s writings or reflects her iconic personality.
