Ghost of the Last Sheaf

A tutor at the Royal School of Needlework, Kate Pankhurst RSN creates hand-embroidered art with both technical mastery and layered meaning. She pushes the boundaries of traditional techniques, giving them new relevance within contemporary forms and themes. She specialises in 3D goldwork.

This embroidery considers the provenance of a single square foot of ground in London: concrete, new apartments, and shops now stand on what was once ancient land of crops, orchards and mysticism.

The goldwork figure elevates and reimagines the humble corn dolly, giving an ancient form new material expression. Her hollow core invites the imagination inward, beckoning viewers into a liminal space where history drifts effortlessly between linen and gold.
