Goldwork embroidery is a luxurious and captivating craft that uses metal threads, such as imitation gold, to create intricate, light-reflecting designs. Hand & Lock's Filigree Butterfly course offers the perfect introduction to the art of goldwork, focusing on creating a stunning butterfly design in an elegant filigree style. Delivered via Zoom with high-resolution cameras, this three-hour online session gives you a close-up view of every stitch, ensuring you capture all the details as you learn. At Hand & Lock, we create a fun, relaxed studio atmosphere that brings the spirit of our physical space to you, offering a supportive and interactive environment while you stitch from the comfort of your own home. You’ll learn three essential techniques using purely gold threads, gaining hands-on experience with the delicate methods that make goldwork embroidery so enchanting.

This exciting taster class offers a beautiful intro into the art of goldwork embroidery, starting from the very basics of the technique. Our expert tutors will guide you through fundamental skills, including threading a needle, applying Pearl Purl and stitching with a range of metallic embroidery threads. (with tips and tricks from our tutors). Delve into the diverse characteristics and properties of various metal threads, followed by immersive instruction on their use, allowing you to bring to life an exquisite design that showcases your new found skill.

Before every taster course, we ensure that all students are fully prepared by providing a detailed kit list well in advance. This list includes all the materials and tools you'll need to participate in the session, along with direct links to recommended suppliers, making it easy for you to source everything ahead of time. You will need: Gold Pearl Purl, Passing Thread, gold Fil A Gant Thread, Base fabric of 40x40cm, Embroidery Needles size 12, 10 inch Hoop and Embroidery Scissors.

Our online courses are delivered via Zoom using a high quality visualiser. Please download Zoom before the course begins (we will send a guide on how to do this when the course is booked). We also have an accompanying WhatsApp group for each of our courses. This group enables you to connect with other students and the tutor by sharing photos of your progress. Please download WhatsApp before the course starts (we will also send a guide on how to do this when the course is booked). All of our online course sessions and recorded and sent out after the class for you to keep forever! They are sent on a link for you to download after the class so please don't worry if you miss a session of tutoring, you can always catch up using the recording.

Our bespoke classes are taught by expert hand embroiderers who have worked in the couture industry for brands such as Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Dior, Valentino, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, YSL, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Schiaparelli, Lanvin and Burberry to name a few. The classes will cover the basics, insider tips and practical application making sure students are fully equipped to go on and apply what they have learned to their own garments and develop their own unique styles. Our tutors are work embroiderers first and tutors second which means they are able to give you a unique insight into the magical world of couture hand embroidery.
