On this creative course we will delve into the many possibilities of taking inspiration from the historical technique of ‘Or Nue - where metal threads are shaded with various colours of soft threads to create contrasting patterns and images. Goldwork threads hold so much potential to explore colour, shade and contrast in embroidery, exploring the beautiful contrast that metal and shade can give us. With a balance of technique and experimentation, there is plenty of ‘breathing space’ left for you to discover your own response to the historical techniques of goldwork.

Techniques & Breakdown

You will be learning Metal Thread Embroidery.

Throughout the weekend, you will build up your own unique series of hand embroidery samples and explorations which will become a tool kit of techniques and explorations to further your creativity and enhance your practice.

Tutor Profile

Hanny is known for her contemporary approach to goldwork embroidery. Since studying at the Royal School of Needlework (2011-13) she has been fascinated by the inherent qualities of metal threads, and has a deep belief in the importance of innovation and self expression to keeping crafts alive. From her studio in Shropshire, she works internationally with interior designers and art consultancies, applying her creative approach to historical techniques to large scale projects for hotels and private residences around the world. She teaches her contemporary approach to goldwork at internationally, including the British Museum, West Dean College and the Australian Design Centre, Sydney.

Hand & Lock School - In Person Tambour Embroidery Course

How the Course Works

All in person courses are delivered in our embroidery school, located at Hand & Lock, 86 Margaret Street, Fitzrovia, London, W1W 8TE. The school is situated upstairs from our studio and is easily accessible by public transport.

Accessibility

Our school is located upstairs in our studio. Unfortunately the building does not have lift access, so use of the stairs would be necessary.

Materials

All of the materials you need for this class will be provided for you as part of your course experience. You are more than welcome to bring your own equipment if you would rather use your own materials but everything will be provided for you.
