Our in person classes are an amazing opportunity to learn a new skill at our newly renovated school located in the Hand & Lock studio.The classes will cover the basics, insider tips and practical application, making sure you are fully equipped to go on and apply what you have learned to your future projects and develop your own unique style. If you are learning a new skill for a specific purpose and need a little advice, our teachers will be able to talk to you about how you can best apply what you have learnt to your specific project. Upon successful completion of the class you will receive an official Hand & Lock certificate detailing the new skills mastered.

Where is the Hand & Lock School located?

Our embroidery school is located at Hand & Lock, 86 Margaret Street, Fitzrovia, London, W1W 8TE. The school is situated upstairs from our studio and is easily accessible by public transport. Please note that there is no lift access, so stairs are required

Who teaches the classes at Hand & Lock?

Our expert tutors are professional hand embroiderers with extensive experience working in the couture industry for luxury brands such as Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Dior, Valentino, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, YSL, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Schiaparelli, Lanvin, and Burberry. All of our teachers are embroiderers first and teachers second, ensuring you receive expert guidance and practical insights.

What types of in-person embroidery courses do you offer?

We offer a diverse range of courses, from beginner-friendly workshops to advanced techniques like goldwork and tambour beading, seasonal masterclasses, private tuition, and our full Hand & Lock Diploma programme. Classes are suitable for all skill levels.

How do I book a course?

You can book your place directly via the Hand & Lock website by visiting our courses page. Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended.

The class I want is sold out. Can I still join?

If a course is fully booked, you can sign up for a 'back in stock' alert. Should a space become available, we will notify you immediately.

Do I need prior embroidery experience?

No prior experience is necessary. We offer classes for all skill levels. Check the specific course description for the recommended skill level and course length.

What should I bring to class?

All materials and tools are provided as part of your course fee. However, you are welcome to bring your own tools if preferred.

Are refreshments provided?

Tea and coffee are provided during classes. You may bring your own mug if you like. Lunch is not provided, but you are welcome to bring your own or explore nearby cafes and eateries. You’ll have a one-hour lunch break and may have the option to continue working during this time.

What if I can't attend my class?

Classes are non-refundable, but if you give at least 10 days’ notice, we will try to reschedule you for another date. Please note we cannot guarantee availability for the same course.

How many students are in each class?

Classes are small, usually with 8-12 students, to ensure personalised attention and a supportive atmosphere.

What if I want extra kit supplies?

Additional materials from your kit are available to purchase on the Hand & Lock website or in-store after your class, where our team can help you select supplies for future projects.

Are the classes accessible for people with restricted mobility?

Our Fitzrovia studio is upstairs without lift access, which may limit accessibility for some visitors. We offer a wide range of live and self-paced online classes that can be enjoyed from home.

Do you offer bespoke or corporate embroidery workshops?

Yes! We provide bespoke one-to-one or group courses at our school as well as tailored corporate or external workshops.

Is parking available nearby?

Limited street parking is available, but we recommend using public transport. Nearby Tube stations include Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road, and Great Portland Street.

Yes! The Hand & Lock shop is exclusively open to the class students only on the weekend of the class, with a 10% discount!
