Memory Record

Memory is something without form. Despite the human weakness of forgetting, civilization has developed because our predecessors left traces of culture as records. In today’s world, where much media has become intangible, we can access an overwhelming amount of information at a dizzying speed. This has also influenced the fashion industry, where fast trend cycles have caused human rights and environmental issues.

Yume regards fashion as a medium of recording. By transforming discarded materials once used for documentation such as photographic film and cassette tapes into embroidery, she makes visible the value of craftsmanship.

This work draws inspiration from the emotional expressions of lines in manga and the sequences of words in novels. Combining Luneville embroidery and sashiko techniques, it is composed of “lines” made with various materials. The motifs that emerge from these gathered lines shine at random, evoking the sleepless nightscape of a vast city.

The pattern, inspired by the rectangular frames of newspapers and manga, can be separated and displayed like a hanging scroll, serving not only as clothing but also as an artwork. This detachable structure allows for the creation of different silhouettes. The embroidery moves with the flow of the fabric embodying both the slow passage of time and the fleeting nature of human memory.
