The Unspoken Narrative

The conceptual foundation of Sarah’s work is rooted in classical fine art. Seeking a narrative that transcends language, Sarah drew inspiration from a detail within Victor Casimir Zier’s 1881 painting, Lying Female Nude. By focusing on the subject’s obscured face and hands, the artist captures a profoundly human moment of vulnerability. It is a visual exploration of how physical gestures can carry the weight of a story, communicating grief, tension, and melancholy.

This narrative is translated through a thread painting technique, through which Sarah builds layers of colour to mimic the depth, shadow, and luminosity of classical oil brushstrokes. The resulting texture is striking: the lifelike anatomy of the subject’s knuckles and flowing strands of hair contrasting with the raw linen background.

Framing this emotive centre is a border of Maltese lace. This delicate textile introduces a personal, secondary narrative to the piece. As an artist whose work is heavily influenced by her island home, Sarah utilises this traditional artisanal craft to connect her own heritage in Malta and Gozo with the wider tapestry of art history. The juxtaposition of the threadpainted figure against the negative space of the lace further creates a dialogue between mediums, eras, and cultures.
