Syncresis

Inspired by Renaissance preparatory studies, Syncresis reflects the intimate dialogue between idea and creation. After examining Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches at the Royal Archive, Ilaria sought to evoke the aura of aged paper through naturally dying her great grandmother’s loom woven linen cotton, grounding her work in history and reimagining through embroidery. Her curated sketches unfold as a personal narrative and cross cultural journey: British heraldic references intertwine with Italian heritage to form new symbolism. A heart alludes to her mother’s condition, a child marks her own loss and the Head of Leda becomes an emblem of healing. Horses evoke royal ceremony, the lion courage to overcome obstacles and Verrocchio’s lilies rebirth and new happiness.

Charcoal drawing forms the foundation, while embroidery overlays new life. Through silk shading, glass beading and goldwork, fragile charcoal lines are elevated into something tactile and luminous. Free motion machine embroidery is used to ‘sketch’ the lilies, followed by refinement through hand embroidery. The cut of the piece introduces a contemporary couture feel, combining modern British design with Italian sartorial tradition.

Syncresis is a work that embodies the synergy of two cultures, inviting the viewer to juxtapose intimate preparatory studies by master artists with the contemporary language of fashion.
