Based on Eden’s upbringing in the UK Deep House scene, this large-scale backdrop focuses on themes of community and family. The piece is named after the Bristol-based House collective “Duvet Vous” that her family started in 1999 and where she plays today – a modern-day tapestry.
The mission of this project was to create a piece that combines her two creative passions for music and embroidery and convey to an audience the story of British underground House and her experience of rave culture. She endeavours to bring a fresh subject matter to subvert traditional expectations of embroidery narratives and uses digital embroidery to capture the electronic beats that inspire her.
The piece is split into different layers to capture the depth of this network. The foreground is made up of the different house rigs Eden has danced to that not only anchor the piece but the party scene itself. The middle layer is stitched drawings of friends and family at parties ranging from the 90’s to present day, bringing in her personal and familial history to this narrative. Behind these is an embroidered self-portrait of Eden dancing to convey the feeling of movement and being lost in the music which fades out into a digitally printed background of smoky waveforms.
