The Ebb, The Flow, The Infinite

The Ebb, The Flow, The Infinite is an embroidered coat and head adornment by embroiderer Annabel Thornton, exploring the interconnection between sea and sky through reflections of one in the other.

Inspired by memories of the North Wales coast, the work reflects the rhythm of the ocean, shifting sandy forms and the dark abyss at night. The meeting of sea and sand mirrors the ebb and flow of breath, while the changing sky reflects the constant movement of life.

Through layered textures, goldwork, beads, sequins and shells, Annabel creates a surface that feels alive. Each stitch follows curves and ripples, guiding the eye from sea to sky. Shells are coated in silver leaf, their ridges catching light like starlight reflected on water, embedding the garment with memory and place. The palette moves from transparent whites to greys and deep blacks, holding celestial brightness alongside the obscurity of the sea at night. Against a black Melton wool, dripping chains and beadwork introduce movement and shimmer.

Astronomy shapes the work through star signs, constellations and mythology. Inspired by North Wales’ Dark Sky landscapes and views of the Milky Way, Annabel connects the coast to the natural world and universe, creating a garment that reflects the infinite movement between earth, sea and sky.
