Achilles

This work is inspired by Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles, a modern retelling of the Greek myth of Achilles and Patroclus. Drawing on a fascination with mythology and its continual reinterpretation, the piece explores the relationship between the legendary warrior and the man behind the hero. With a background in costume design and a particular interest in leatherwork and Goldwork embroidery, Adam brings these disciplines together in an experimental suit of armour that sits between costume, sculpture and embroidery.

With a background in costume design and a particular interest in leatherwork and Goldwork embroidery, Adam brings these disciplines together in an experimental suit of armour that sits between costume, sculpture and embroidery. Using sculpted leather, sewn elements and Goldwork embroidery techniques, the piece explores the contrast between strength and softness: the toughness and protection of armour is softened and challenged by the delicate, tactile nature of embroidery.

The Goldwork is inspired by Patroclus’ description of Achilles: “When he smiles his face shines like the sun.” Radiating gold threads transform the face into an image of light and movement, with sun motifs continuing across the armour as a form of Achilles’ livery. The black and gold palette references Greek pottery, while embroidered initials—“A” and “P”—introduce an intimate element. The armour becomes not only a symbol of strength and protection, but a means of revealing love, identity and vulnerability.
