Lucy Newman

Elgin Archive: A Future Hoard
Mentor: Sam D'Cruze
Country: United Kingdom
Lucy Newman is a UK-based hand embroidery artist who creates thread paintings on reclaimed textiles that explore imagined futures and distortion. She is a member of the Bound Embroidery Collective and Design-Nation, with her work exhibited in the UK and internationally, including in the USA and Italy.
Inspired by a family archive box containing a fragment of MacGregor tartan and a carved lily on a wooden stool made by her grandfather, Lucy Newman weaves personal memory into Scotland’s wider textile history. Drawing on the Johnstons of Elgin archive and the Galloway Hoard, she imagines a vessel from a future archaeological find — a distorted, hand-embroidered record of movement, decay, and survival.
