Hand & Lock’s brand new ‘Lover’s Eye’ taster offers a modern take on a historic motif, blending the elegance of goldwork embroidery with the textural richness of applique. In this immersive three-hour course, you’ll craft your own striking Lover’s Eye design, learning how to layer fabrics with precision and enhance intricate details using shimmering metallic threads. A perfect introduction to these timeless techniques, this taster session invites you to explore the artistry of embroidery while creating a piece that captures the romantic intrigue of this iconic design.

This exciting taster class offers a contemporary  intro into the art of goldwork embroidery, starting from the very basics of the technique. Our expert tutors will guide you through fundamental skills, including threading a needle, applying Pearl Purl and adding pops of colour with our beautiful Cutwork (with tips and tricks from our tutors). Delve into the diverse characteristics and properties of various metal threads, followed by immersive instruction on their use, allowing you to bring to life an exquisite design that showcases your new found skill.

Before every taster course, we ensure that all students are fully prepared by providing a detailed kit list well in advance. This list includes all the materials and tools you'll need to participate in the session, along with direct links to recommended suppliers, making it easy for you to source everything ahead of time. You will need: Gold Pearl Purl, Stranded Cotton in a colour of your choice, Green Bullion, Yellow Gutermann’s thread, Base fabric of 40x40cm, Embroidery Needles size 12, 10 inch Hoop and Embroidery Scissors.

Accessibility

Our in person classes are taught in our school which is located upstairs in our studio. Unfortunately the building does not have lift access, so use of the stairs would be necessary.

Tutor Profiles

Our bespoke classes are taught be expert hand embroiderers who have worked in the couture industry for brands such as Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Dior, Valentino, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, YSL, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Schiaparelli, Lanvin and Burberry to name a few. The classes will cover the basics, insider tips and practical application making sure students are fully equipped to go on and apply what they have learned to their own garments and develop their own unique styles. Our tutors are work embroiderers first and tutors second which means they are able to give you a unique insight into the magical world of couture hand embroidery.
