Hand & Lock x Bernadette Banner

We collaborated with Fashion Historian and Youtuber Bernadette Banner and her team on the recreation of a Regency period embroidered waistcoat for a special event.  The project was a huge success featuring techniques both new and old including digital machine embroidery, goldwork and silk shaded hand embroidery. Bernadette was keen to showcase to her wide following the variety of embroidery techniques at our disposal which are used by both contemporary fashion and costume designers as well as restorers and fashion history enthusiasts alike.  Bernadette collaborated with the H&L team to film a documentary following the creative process of the waistcoat production from design and digitising, through to the final hand touches,
The success of our collaboration prompted us to create this Kit together, which includes a piece of material that has been pre-machine embroidered for you. The material shows part of a design, which is inspired by the regency waistcoat project. It uses lots of the same shapes, colours and motifs. The Kit also includes all the materials you need to complete the design with beautiful hand embroidered and goldwork finishes.  If you are new to embroidery, this kit is a perfect starting point for a beginner. The machine embroidered design includes helpful stitched guides to show you where to place materials and the instructions are highly detailed with photographs and diagrams.
The design has been placed in the centre of a large square of satin, which gives lots of options for how the piece could be used!  Cut down and mounted, the design could be framed as a work of art. But it could also be made into a patch pocket or even a small evening purse!  We look forward to seeing the process of your kit making and what you will create with your own Regency inspired embroidery!

Please Note: The base design has been machine embroidered at the Hand & Lock Workshop using the highest quality rayon viscose and metallic threads.  The mini design has been created using identical design elements from the Bernadette Banner waistcoat project, in a new configuration.  Due to the nature of machine embroidery, there will be variations in stitches from time to time and occasionally, threads may catch or begin to unravel.  If you notice any thread beginning to unravel, these can easily be secured by either: 1. At the back of the fabric, use another thread (the white or yellow gutterman in your kit) to catch and couch the loose end, securing it.  2. Sometimes it helps to unravel a few more stitches, to give a longer thread tail to work with. The loose tail can be threaded onto a needle, stitched back through the fabric and secured as normal at the back.  3. Use any of the additional materials in your kit (e.g. beads/ sequins/ passing thread) to add any extra design element where you need to secure any machine threads.
