Tutor and Head of Educational Programming

Lucy Martin

Born in the picturesque village of Madeley, Lucy studied hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework before joining Hand & Lock in 2022.

A keen advocate and ambassador for hand embroidery, Lucy joined Hand & Lock first as a diligent and talented intern, before graduating and being invited to head up the Hand & Lock embroidery school. Her exceptional hand embroidery skills have won her a legion of online fans and delivered top prizes in the Hand & Lock Prize. Now she is tasked with sharing her natural talent and coaxing embroidery brilliance out of all our students.

In her capacity as the Head of Educational programming Lucy’s job is to create a dynamic educational programme for the uninitiated, novices and experts alike. Research, design, implementation and teaching all form part of her daily work. Well organised,  flexible and highly trained in the techniques of embroidery, Lucy enjoys making sure the designs students work on challenge their abilities and reflect high fashion techniques.

Tasked with growing the embroidery school she is curating a wide range of diverse and exciting classes with guest tutors from around the world. For Lucy, the opportunity to share her passion for embroidery with others is part of her mission to help preserve and maintain the craft for future generations.
