Part Time Design Assistant

Basic hand sewing and design skills essential

Location: London Oxford Circus
Salary: Paid

As design assistant you will be required to undertake a wide variety of jobs that involve daily assisting in the studio to the designers as well as working smaller design projects for yourself. Most of the work you will do will be on a digital embroidery machine. You will be required to use the embroidery machine on a daily basis and well as complete daily admin work. Good self motivation and initiative are key in this role as well as good communications skill with the general public.

Primary and secondary responsibilities:

Machine embroidery:
– You will be required to complete all the jobs that are expected of you to a high and acceptable standard each day
– Each job will have to be completed within the time scale you have been allocated.
– Time management is essential for machine embroidery work.

Military orders
– This responsibility is a shared over the team however you will be required to take an active interest in this side of the business
– We ask you to take the time to understand the meanings of badges and ranks within the armed forces so you will have a good knowledge when talking to customers.
– Use your intuitive to complete orders if your other colleagues are busy.

Taking orders:
– Throughout the day many customers will be requiring Hand & Lock services.
– You will be required to answer the door or phone and consult them on any order they may want to place.
– This should be done in a professional manner as well as always trying to up sell the product or embroidery.
– You should be able to quote small bespoke orders without help from a senior team member.

Designing:
– You will be required to assist any of the designers that may require your help on larger jobs.
– You will be able to take on smaller clients to design work once you have been fully trained on the embroidery machine and hand embroidery techniques.

Admin:
– A certain amount of admin will be required of you.
– All job should be booked in through the Daily Sheet programme
– All finished jobs should be invoiced through sage
– You will be required to book in any external work that may arrive in the studio.

Secondary Responsibilities:
– Completing all embroidery/jobs to the highest standard that you can achieve and completing in an acceptable time.
– Always looking to expanding your knowledge of embroidery to keep your ideas fresh and contemporary
– Helping on the Hand and Lock annual Collection Organisation
– Keep an organised work area that is respectful to others.
– As a self motivated job make sure that all work in keep up to a good speed and work is completed on time. ( Large delays will be taken seriously)
– Make sure all timesheets for samples odd jobs and charged work are filled out
– Make sure you notify your head of department if any materials are low or out of Stock.

Communication:
– Communicate with fellow colleagues in all departments efficiently as possible to make sure all Jobs are completed without fault
– Attend weekly and Monthly meeting that you are required at. Use this time to raise any questions you might have, and be willing to take on and criticism that may be give to you.
– Always communicate with fellow colleagues in a professional and polite manner.
– Make sure any communication with customers is to the highest possible standard.

Other responsibilities:
– Represent Hand & Lock within and out of the work hours as a respectable professional and
as advocate to the business.
– Good professional appearance.

Internships

Studio Assistant

Studio_Assistant

You will spend your day working with the design and embroidery teams to help facilitate the flow of jobs through the studio in a timely and organised fashion. Jobs will include assisting the designer on large scale design work, assisting the embroiders with preparing garments for monogramming and setting up frames. Depending on the time of year you may be assisting with in-studio events, the Spring/Summer collection or the annual Hand & Lock Prize for embroidery. Duties may also include assisting with machine embroidery work, posting work on social media and maintaining an ordered studio.

If a large embroidery project is taken on during your placement you may also (dependant on you skill level) be drafted in to work on the frames. While at Hand & Lock you should learn how to construct a large scale embroidery frame, how to transfer embroidery designs and how to frame pieces for machine embroidery. You will also have the opportunity to attend embroidery classes Hand & Lock run during your placement (space permitting). This internship is ideal for anyone hoping to broaden their experience within the fashion industry and interns the time and scope to work on their own projects and learn from professionals.

Embroidery Assistant

Previous embroidery experience required

Embr_Assistant

You will work on creating seasonal samples with our head of hand embroidery. During the internship you will work at a full size embroidery frame using haute couture techniques to produce on trend samples for the design team to present to potential clients. Duties will also include helping the studio assistant maintain a tidy and well ordered studio and helping out on large scale projects if and when necessary. While at Hand & Lock you will have the opportunity to learn new embroidery skills and how to take traditional techniques and apply them in a contemporary fashion. Especially talented interns will have the opportunity to learn haute couture embroidery techniques such as goldwork, silkshading and tambour beading.

Marketing Assistant

No previous experience necessary but must be able to write and speak fluent English.

Marketing

You will assist the Communications Manager to promote and sell the Hand & Lock brand. Duties include managing social media, writing press releases, designing publicity materials and organising promotional events. You will learn how to use essential marketing software’s such as Hootsuite, Survey Monkey and Constant Contacts as well as how to edit articles on WordPress and add new products to an Oxatis eCommerce site. This internship is ideal for anyone looking to start a career in fashion Marketing or PR and offers plenty of room for developing your own projects or ideas.
