Lisbon born Mafalda was introduced to arts and textiles by her grandparents and went on to study fashion and embroidery at Brighton, CSM and LCF. She joined Hand & Lock in 2021.
In November 2020, after placements at Jenny Packham and Burberry, Mafalda, began her Hand & Lock internship hoping to develop and expand her hand embroidery skills. But after working first hand on digital embroidery projects she quickly discovered a passion and innate skill for digitising and machine embroidery.
A highly technical embroidery designer, Mafalda first became interested in garment construction before becoming intrigued by the decorative power of embroidery. After moving from Lisbon to London she completed a degree and multiple embroidery and design courses before commencing an internship at Hand & Lock.
Now she is sought after for her ability to interpret a client’s vision into digital stitch. With her garment construction and sketching skills she is able to solve problems and illustrate solutions to her clients. Her favourite aspect of a project is researching new techniques or getting to experiment with new technologies.
Mafalda is a technical marvel, a skilled artist, an avid reader, speaks multiple languages and is funny. Don't worry, we don't like her either.
